hartwell lake

1 hr. 45 min. I-85 N until about 10 miles before SC state line. We believe the Lavonia/Ga. 17 exit is the closest. Go east towards the town of Hartwell. Go through town and take the old U.S. 29 (we think this is now GA Spur 51). The old highway basically deadends on a penninsula giving you access to winds from most directions. Russell Malmberg has scanned a map (330 kb) to help you get to his favorite site. Thanks, Russell.
lake juliette

50 min.(actually closer than Lanier if you live on the south side of Atlanta.) Southwest winds are good here, but west to northwest are excellent. Water temperature is generally about 5 degrees warmer than Lanier during the winter (maybe due to power plant on the lake -- don't worry the lake is very clean, people practice scuba diving here) Also, boats with engines larger 25 h.p. are not allowed! From April through September there is a $2 parking fee. The rest of the year, the actual launching area is only open to windsurfers.

To get there from Atlanta, take I-75 south to exit # 60 and turn left. Go east on 18 (for about 6 miles) until you come to the the first blinking red light. Take a left at the light on to highway 23 (north). Drive for about a mile and Dames Ferry park will be on your left.

clark hill lake

About 2.5 hrs. Thanks to club member Renee Jenkins.
From I-20 take exit 61, turn left onto Hwy 221. You will pass through a small town called Appling, stay on 221. You will come to a 4 way stop sign, stay on 221.

Go appr. 4 miles to Lake Springs Rec. Area for N, NE, E, SE, and S. Don't get your hopes up for these directions. (ed. note: look at Pete's directions below for East)

For NW, W, SW, and S stay on 221, you will cross the dam and the road ends. Turn left onto hwy 28/221 go .9 miles and turn left. (there is a boat ramp sign directily to your right). This winding road takes you straight to the water.

From the exit to the last set of directions is only 20 minutes max.

Pete Wolfinger also gave us some directions but this is the "scenic" route (ie takes longer).

Take I20 to Augusta, and get off at Exit 66. Turn right at the light, onto Riverwatch Parkway. Go under I20, and the light there. Two lights later, turn right onto Fury's Ferry Road (Highway 28).
Drive approximately 19 miles to the intersection of Highway 150 at Clarks Hill. Stop there and check the wind. If it's between SSW and NNW (or shifting that way), go straight. If it's anything from N around to SSE, turn left. If it's due South, wait at the intersection until it changes!
If you chose to go straight, drive less than 2 miles and take the first paved road (not marked) to the left. Follow it back Scott's Ferry. Lots of parking, great rigging area, boat ramp launch, and the Corps on the SC side actually likes us.
If you chose to turn left, go across the dam. As soon as you get across the dam, check your watch. If it's Winter, stop and park on the right side of the road so you can sail from that sandy beach you see down there (because Lake Springs Park/Center Point is probably closed). If it isn't Winter, go approximately 2 miles past the dam to the sign for Lake Springs Park. Turn right, and stay to your right until you get to the guard shack. Go straight back to Center Point. Lots of parking, great rigging area, picnic tables, bathrooms, stairs down to the water, and the Corps on the GA side hasn't arrested me yet. (Pete and the Corps used to have a cozy relationship back in the days of the mandatory PFD law.)
Alternatively, you can call me in Augusta at (706) 650-2989. This is especially true in anything "Eastish", since I am a member of the Augusta Sailing Club and we have a good East. site. Try to fit Clarks Hill into your sailing schedule. Hope to see you there. -Pete Wolfinger

Want to build your own lake? Plans for Lake Thurman (Clark Hill) Dam

west point lake

1-1.5 hr. Mark Smith writes to let us know that there is windsurfing on the lower "hooch". Take I-85 South to exit 1 (West Point exit, hwy 18---about 65 miles south of Newnan); turn right off exit ramp and go partially through West Point and turn right at first stop light (about a mile from 85 exit); go about 2 to 3 miles and turn left at sign that says "Shaefer Heard Day Use Area." Follow signs to this area for Northwesterly wind (go out to point just below campground), but you'll need to cross dam and go to west side of lake for North to Northeasterly wind and turnn into first parking lot on west side. Questions? Send him and email at windsurf@mindspring.com
lake oconee

1-1.5 hr. From the abc windforums:
I-20 east exit on exit 130 Greensboro, turn right on Hwy 44 go to Parksferry Campground off of Corey Staion Rd. ÊOr from I-20 go right on Hwy 44 to Old Salem Park off of Linger-longer Rd. ÊI was told they would be best on an east west wind. ÊBut we need to go and see for ourselves. Ê
I stopped in at Green County Regional Airport and they told me that I could call 706-453-7008 or (mobile phone 706-474-0060 ) and get the wind speed and direction. ÊThis airport is located about 5 miles from lake Oconee. Ê Ê
Anyone interested in a new adventure??

lake horton

1 hr. New Lake-"Horton"
And I do mean new. ÊIt's only been there a year or so. ÊI haven't seen it on any maps yet except for the latest aviation sectional. Ê It's 35 minutes south of Hartsfield and bordered by the towns of Woolsey on the north, Brooks on the southwest, and Vaughn on the Southeast. ÊIt has a main body of water around two miles in all directions. ÊPublic access is a park at the north end (See Web site below). ÊIt is restricted to sail/electric/human powered boats. Êrumer has it that no swimming is allowed. ÊIt is unknown whether windsurfing is O.K. ÊIf anybaody ahs any more information. please post a response. Ê

st. simons island

St. Simons Surfsailor's Club 5 hr. Courtesy of Ricky Wright. Basic directions for getting to St. Simons Island: We are located about 1 hr. south of Savannah Ga. and off Brunswick Ga.(take exit 8 A east at Brunswick Ga. off I95 south. This is spur 25,follow it to hwy 17 south. Take hwy 17 south to the St. Simons causeway & follow causeway onto island. This becomes Demere Rd. Follow Demere Rd. past Airport & Bloody Marsh Park to the eastbeach causeway. Follow causeway to the old Coast Guard station.
You are now entering the eastbeach parking area. You will see an area on the beach fenced off and kind of hidden by bushes with sailboat mast sticking up.This is the St. Simons Surf Sailors club. We have a building to store our prerigged sails and covered board storage. It's just like being at one of those sailboard resorts with everything ready to go and change out as the conditions warrant only it's in "our own back yard" ) and about 1 hr. north of Jacksonville Fla. (take exit 6 A off I95 north onto hwy 17 north across the Sidney Lanier bridge to the St. Simons causeway ........ )
Most of the sailing in done off of eastbeach for wind directions north , northeast, east, southeast, south, and southwest. For westerlies we sail the channel between St. Simons and Jekyll Island (very strong currents on incoming or out going tides!) Only sail this when the wind speed is above 16 mph! The eastbeach area is good for learning at low tide when the sandbars are exposed. It is very shallow for a ways out , so it is good for practicing moves and tricks. As the tide comes in we get bump & jump conditions and swells.1000 yrds out is a sandbar that runs parallel the beach. Past this we get large swells and waves. There are strong currents on outgoing and incoming tides but in between it's pretty calm. This is a great place to sail with all the different conditions , sandbars and Islands (Sea Island, St.Simons and Jekyll Is.) So the area is good for all skill levels depending on conditions at the time. Always plan your sailing around the tides and winds if you are novice.
