windsurfing at sullivan's island, station 29

This is the most popular windsurfing spot in Charleston. There is decent parking and a one block walk to a boardwalk access at the beach. Follow the parking signs, or else. Most people rig on the grass (not in someones yard.) You can rig on the beach as well.
There are always sandbars about 100 yards off the beach. These offer nice flat water conditions inside of them and good learning conditions as well. Past the sandbars is plenty of room for open ocean sailing. The outermost sandbars occasionally provide good wavesailing.
The most common sails are 5.7-6.5. And we get enough 4.7-5.5 days to make it almost a year round season. Spring and Fall are best. One last caution; the tides can be extremely swift in this area. Be sure to check them and not get swept too far in or out.
To access Station 29: Go to Sullivan's Island (Charleston > Mt. Pleasant > Sullivan's Island) and find Middle St. The blocks are called 'stations' and ascend from St.(station) 8 at the south end of the island, to St. 32 at the north end near the Isle of Palms. Take Middles St. to St. 29, turn toward the beach and drive until you reach the boardwalk.
kitesurfing at sullivan's island

Sullivan's offers great conditions to kitesurf. The predominant wind directions are NE and SW, which are sideshore. In the summer we get 10-15 knot seabreeze almost every day which is some sort of southern direction. The front beach has plenty of room for open water kiting, and can change from quite flat to quite choppy. The northern end of the island has several sandbars off the beach which provide decent surf to kite in (watch out for windsurfers.) To launch on the front beach go to the lighthouse, and then north one block. Set up just north of the rocks, this is a designated watercraft area, and there are fewer people near there. The rocks continue underwater and form the jetty's, so launching south of them will cause you to travel over them. Sometimes they get shallow.
To kite near the sandbars launch at Station 26 or 28. This is near the windsurfing area. There is usually plenty of room to launch.
To access Sullivan's Island: Go to Sullivan's Island (Charleston > Mt. Pleasant > Sullivan's Island) and find Middle St. The blocks are called 'stations' and ascend from St.(station) 8 at the south end of the island, to St. 32 at the north end near the Isle of Palms. To find the lighthouse take Middle St. to St. 22, or close by, and park. Walk to the beach. To find the sandbars take Middle St. to St. 26 ot 28, and park. Walk to the beach. On a south or south e/w wind launch near the lighthouse.
To access Station 29: Go to Sullivan's Island (Charleston > Mt. Pleasant > Sullivan's Island) and find Middle St.. The blocks are called 'stations' and ascend from St.(station) 8 at the south end of the island, to St. 32 at the north end near the Isle of Palms. Take Middles St. to St. 22, turn toward the beach and park. Walk to rocks by lighthouse. To kite on the sandbars park at St. 26 or St. 28. Walk to beach.
