33rd Fall Classic

Our Fall Regatta was a success by any measure. Picture perfect weather made for a great weekend of sailing, camping and hangin' out. There were 27 racers and another 20 or so family and hangers-on who came for the fun and debauchery– a record turnout for the last decade or so. We had plenty of wind on Saturday to test the skill, fortitude and equipment of the racers. There was just enough wind on Sunday to get in a 5th race to give us a throwout.

Congratulations to Kurt Schumaker on a triumphant return to the racing scene with a convincing win in Open Unlimited. Kurt unseated the venerable Dave Stanger by just 2 points. Local dude (and one of the original ABC members), Kevin Osburn sailed convincingly to 3rd. John Jordan won Sport Heavy. William Herderich likewise continues to impress, with his once-a-year foray in racing, by winning the Sport Middleweights. Shell Pointer, Chris Graves dominated the Sport Fleet with his heavy air expertise on Saturday and astute Sunday performance. He was First overall in Sport, throwing out his worst finish, a Third. Scott 'ShredDog' Spreen was close on his heels and would have been right there had it not been for a UJ failure in race 4 giving him a DNF. The hussies from Shell Point had a catfight in the Chick Fleet with the lovely Linda Downey taking top honors.

Thanks to our sponsors for the regatta: Windsense & Gene Mathis, Chinook, Aerotech/Epic Gear/Powerex, West Marine and new this year, Zhik. Zhik sells very high quality sailing apparel– check 'em out at zhik.com. Chris Graves and Terry Rinkel and the Shell Point Sailboard Club put together a nice meal on Friday and showed up with the troops to provide support. Thanks to Don & Sharmin Franklin for giving a ride to AJC Photographer, Brant Sanderlin. Check out some of his shots here:

A big shoutout to Bob Graves for bringing his awesome tunes and especially for his help with scoring. Feeding 40 people 5 meals is not a small task and it wouldn't have been possible without the amazing efforts of Jim & Pam Burke, Floral Designs by Kevin Osburn, Reggie Strickland and especially Sherry Martin who put her gourmet touch on everything. The food was fantastic! Kudos to the Race Committee, headed by Jonathan Stewart and Nick Cumbie and including Gabbie Panasiuk, Chris Jackson, Wes Tanner, Pam & Jim Burke and Reggie Strickland.

And the biggest shoutout....

None of this happens without the tireless efforts of Chris Voith. Of course, you are too modest to even mention yourself so we'll do it for you.

Big thanks!
